The new “Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids” Act signed on December 13 is getting a lot of positive feedback for the changes it will make to the federal school lunch program, but there are some reasons to hold back praise. I’m working on putting together a more comprehensive piece, but I wanted to share a few links to get folks thinking.
In June, the Weston A. Price Foundation (WAPF) issued its analysis of the USDA’s new dietary guidelines, which drive the decisions about what goes into school lunch. At its November Wise Traditions Conference, the WAPF unveiled its new “Healthy 4 Life” Alternative Guidelines, which I’ll write about at more length in the coming weeks.
Here is the press release from the White House, which quotes a whole bunch of people offering kudos for the law, including Omnivore’s Dilemma author Michael Pollan. There you can find a fact sheet on the law and a sample menu, which shows whole milk being replaced by low-fat and flavored milks.
